White Determined To Work Hard To Earn Place In Squad

Leah White is keen to keeping working hard to earn some vital game time for Forfar Farmington as the season enters the halfway point.

The 18 year old defender has been restricted to just five appearances so far as Farmington build a fantastic run of form, however she is delighted to be learning from those keeping her out of the team.

White reckons the morale in the dressing room is high at the moment with five wins from their last six games seeing the side sit in fourth place in the Scottish Women’s Premier League One and hopes it will continue.

“The girls are all on top form at the moment and the last few games have been exciting to watch and be part of. Everyone is buzzing to be picking up points and climbing our way up the table, we are currently sitting in a really good position and everyone is really happy with the team’s performances.”

“The atmosphere in the dressing room both before and after games is great, everyone is excited and encouraging towards one another and the great team spirit at Farmington is something I love being a part of.”

The defender, who came all the way through the Farmington youth system, feels that despite the season going well, her confidence hasn’t been great with a lack of game time due to the performances of others.

“The season so far has been really good in terms of team performance and winning vital games to get us points to ensure we are keeping ourselves in the top half of the table.”

“As one of the youngest members of the team, my own confidence this season has been low due to lack of game time and I don’t feel I have performed my best in the games I have been given the chance to play in due to not playing regularly enough.”

“I will continue working hard in training to improve all aspects of my game and hopefully will get some vital game time during the remainder of the season which will hopefully help me regain my confidence.”

White made her Farmington debut as a 15 year old in June 2015 and she believes she is involved with a great squad, with the teenager eager to learn from her teammates and progress herself on and off the pitch.

“The girls are a great bunch and I learn from them all the time. During games and training they talk to me and guide me through situations, allowing me to learn as I play. I feel I’m always learning and there’s always something I can improve on with the help of the girls around me.

“Alana, both on and off the pitch, always keeps me right and encourages me 100%, and I think sometimes when your confidence is low, all you need is someone to tell you that you’re playing well to motivate you a bit more.”

With the main squad out of action due to the international break, White was afforded the chance to get some game time under her belt with Jeff Rioch’s Ladies side and she found herself on the scoresheet with a rare goal as Farmington defeated Turriff United 5-0 away from home.

The defender was pleased to be able to get a full 90 minutes and praised Rioch’s side for being so welcoming.

“I think it’s great to be able to play for the Ladies team every so often. I really enjoyed the game with them this weekend and to get the full 90 minutes and score a goal was great for me. It’s a great opportunity to get a run out after not getting much game time for a while and the girls are a very friendly and welcoming group.”

Mark Nisbet’s side return to action this Sunday and it is a big week for Farmington with three games against Glasgow City in the cup before a midweek trip to Hibernian; the week is rounded off with another visit by City in the league.

White is confident the squad can take something from the three games, pointing out the tight 1-0 defeat to City in April where the side were unlucky not to take a point right at the death.

“We have a tough week coming up with City twice and Hibs, but I don’t think it’s anything that the girls can’t handle. We have been on top form the past few games, picking up vital points and we will work hard in training to ensure we prepare ourselves for these big games the best we can.”

“I have 100% belief in all of the girls to go out there and perform the way we know we can, hopefully we will get something out of these games and show the rest of the league what we are capable of. We were unlucky in April with a narrow 1-0 defeat against City and if we can improve on that performance hopefully we can take something from the games.”

Smith Elated With Progress Made In League

Forfar Farmington made it five wins from six games on Sunday and Robyn Smith reckons the side deserve to be where they are in the league.

Goals from Smith and Megan McCarthy sealed a 2-1 win at home to Hamilton in their first home game since mid-April as they moved to within two points of third placed Celtic.

The 25 year old winger feels results such as this are what’s needed in order to extend the gap between themselves and the relegation zone.

“I’m delighted with the result, we knew Sunday was a big game in terms of avoiding slipping down the table. These are the games we need to be coming away with the three points and we did just that.”

Smith grabbed the opening goal less than sixty seconds into the second half when she lobbed Lauren Grant and the former Jeanfield Swifts player believes it helped her improve on her first half performance.

“I thought I done away okay, there were a few errors and a few missed chances but I think I recovered from that in the second half. I knew chances wouldn’t come around often so I knew if I got another one it had to be hitting the back of the net and it did.”

This was Smith’s second goal of the season against Hamilton and having netted previously against them, she is high in confidence when it comes to facing the Accies.

“It certainly gives me a bit more confidence knowing I’ve scored against them before and to be honest, it was one of the first things I thought of after scoring, so I was delighted to see it hit the back of the net.”

It’s now four for the season for Smith, with a few assists alongside the goals; while she didn’t expect to have so many she is delighted with her contribution so far.

“If you told me at the start of the season I’d have scored four already and chipped in with a few assists, I’d have been delighted so I’m pleased to have contributed as much as I have so far.”

Farmington are now fourth in the league, thirteen points above the relegation zone and two points behind Celtic in third. The side were written off as relegation candidates at the start of the year but Smith feels the side deserve to be where they are in the league.

“At the start of the season our aim was always to stay up, especially being the team that’s just been promoted, but we’ve performed well and we deserve to be sitting where we are. Come the end of the season we will be delighted to be sitting in the top five, that way we are back amongst the established SWPL1 sides.”

The next three games leading up to the summer break will be a real test for Farmington with a league and cup double against Glasgow City either side of a midweek trip to Hibernian. Smith admits it will be challenging for the squad, however it’s a challenge the side will be relishing.

“If we perform at our best we can look to take points from the top teams. We were unlucky the last time we played City and we limited Hibs to scoring in the second half so we need to believe in ourselves.”

“We are under no illusions however, that Hibs and City are still unbeaten and challenging for the league so we will prepare well and look to put in a good performance on the day and see what happens come the end of the ninety minutes.”

SBSSWPL1: Forfar Farmington 2 Hamilton Academical 1

Forfar Farmington continued their good run of form with a tight 2-1 win over Hamilton Academical in the SBSSWPL1.

After a goalless first half Robyn Smith put Farmington ahead before Katie Rice equalised, however Megan McCarthy secured all three points for Mark Nisbet’s side.

Just one change was made from the midweek win over Stirling University as Nicola Davidson replaced Tammy Harkin.

Accies had the first chance of the game four minutes in when Katie Rice’s tame effort was held by Fiona McNicoll.

Four minutes later Robyn Smith fired wide after being put through by Danni McGinley before Caroline Heron saw a header cleared from a Smith corner.

McGinley found herself set up by Smith in the 21st minute but her shot was deflected past the post.

Heron headed wide shortly before Rice saw a free kick held by McNicoll as the half drew to a close.

The final chances of the half fell to Megan McCarthy and McGinley, however neither of them could fine the target.

Farmington came storming out of the blocks after half time and took the lead less than sixty seconds after the restart. Cassie Cowper played the ball towards the box and despite the Hamilton defence having three players surrounding the ball, they failed to deal with it and Smith nipped in to lob Grant for her fourth goal of the season.

McGinley and Heron came close to doubling the lead before Nicola Davidson tried to repeat her goal at Celtic last Sunday as she sent a long range free kick towards goal but Grant scrambled to push the effort wide.

From the corner Forfar failed to threaten and from the counter attack Hamilton equalised in controversial circumstances. The ball fell outside the box and Cheryl Kilcoyne attempted to reach it along with a Hamilton player, the Farmington midfielder looked like she was fouled as she was sent spinning in the air. The referee allowed play to go on despite Kilcoyne being in some distress and the visitors took advantage with Rice finding the back of the net.

Following the goal Kilcoyne attempted to play on but was forced off as she was taken to hospital, with the club later informed she had cracked her collarbone.

The scores were level for just ten minutes as Farmington were awarded a free kick in the 68th minute; Davidson lofted the set piece into the box and McCarthy headed past Grant for her first goal of the season.

The final twenty minutes of the game were end to end as both sides looked for a vital goal, Hamilton came closest deep into injury time when Amy Bulloch rattled the crossbar before the loose ball was cleared.

Hamilton could, and maybe should, have had a penalty late on as Rice’s free kick looked like it hit the hand of McCarthy but the referee waved away claims. The resulting corner found the head of Kirsty Fraser, but she couldn’t find the target in the final chance of the game.

The result pushes Farmington thirteen points away from the foot of the table and are now just two points away from third.

SBSSWPL1: Stirling University 0 Forfar Farmington 3

Forfar Farmington made it four wins from five in May with a comfortable 3-0 win at Ochilview over Stirling University on Wednesday night.

A goal in either half by Caroline Heron along with Megan Robb’s second goal since joining moved the side six points clear of the bottom half of the table.

With players missing through work commitments, Tammy Harkin and Megan Robb were drafted into the starting XI to replace captain Nicola Davidson and Beth McPherson.

The hosts almost got on to a perfect start just 30 seconds in as Orla King’s cross found Tegan Reynolds but her effort was easily held by Fiona McNicoll.

Three minutes later Farmington had their first chance as Tammy Harkin set up Caroline Heron on the edge of the box; her shot found the arms of Chloe Logan.

Danni McGinley combined with Megan Robb shortly after as the latter sent a cross in for Harkin, she controlled the ball before firing at the keeper.

At the other end Rebecca Galbraith latched onto a long ball, however her final effort failed to trouble McNicoll as she blasted over.

Heron and Kayleigh Brough were denied by Logan but it wasn’t long before the Stirling keeper was beaten. In the 21st minute Alana Bruce sent a fantastic cross from deep and Heron rose highest to head the ball into the back of the net via the post.

Farmington kept up their pressure following this with Cheryl Kilcoyne failing to find the target before Harkin hit the sidenetting.

On the stroke of half time the lead was doubled; Robyn Smith’s corner was sent into the box and Stirling failed to clear with Megan McCarthy knocking the ball down allowing Megan Robb to get the decisive touch as the assistant referee judged the ball had crossed the line.

It was much the same after the break as Mark Nisbet’s side hunted for a third goal and almost got it through Smith when her corner hit the bar with Logan beaten.

In the 51st minute Harkin tried her luck from distance, however her shot was going wide until Danni McGinley deflected it towards goal with Logan scrambling to collect it.

McGinley had a header from Bruce’s cross held while at the other end Reynolds had a tame shot find the arms of McNicoll.

It was almost three for Farmington in the 56th minute when Robb rattled the post, however she was ruled offside as she met Kilcoyne’s cross.

Sixty seconds later Robb tried her luck from long range but couldn’t beat Logan for a second time.

The attacker then headed wide from a McGinley cross before Smith sent a 30 yard free kick flying over the bar.

McGinley and Kilcoyne were close to adding a third but it finally came in the 76th minute when another Bruce cross found Heron and she was more than happy to bury the ball into the back of the net for her second and Farmington’s third.

This killed the game off and Farmington were more than happy to see the game out without really threatening the keeper in the final quarter of an hour.

The result sees Farmington move six points ahead of Rangers and consolidate their fourth place position after an impressive month.

McCarthy Looks To Continue Strong Partnership With Brough

Megan McCarthy expressed her delight at forming a centre back partnership with Kayleigh Brough and believes they compliment each other well.

The former Inverness City stopper was also disappointed to come away with nothing against Celtic at the weekend after going ahead early in the first half.

McCarthy and Brough have both been almost ever present at the back together, missing just one game each out of twelve and the former praised Brough’s style.

She said: “Kayleigh has been great to play alongside. She isn’t scared of getting into challenges and putting her body on the line to get to the ball. In turn that gives me confidence, because I know that she has my back and vice versa.”

Farmington went ahead against Celtic in the 19th minute through Nicola Davidson’s fantastic free kick but a goal either side of the break saw the hosts take the points on Sunday and McCarthy reckons they should have gained confidence from the opening goal.

“It was disappointing as we scored first we should have built in confidence from this but unfortunately the chances weren’t coming for us and we couldn’t find the net again. It was quite a defensive game for us today.”

The 26 year old was frustrated at conceding the winner so soon after half time and felt it was a confidence blow to her and her teammates.

“It’s disenchanting to concede so early on in the second half as it gives your confidence a hit and it’s always a hard blow to recover from.”

Despite the defeat, McCarthy was pleased with her tackling but pinpointed a few areas she needs to improve.

She said: “I was happy with a few of the challenges I made today, again frustrated that I didn’t prevent one of the goals, better communication was needed and maybe we could have got a point from today.”

Farmington will now be in action on Wednesday and Sunday, taking on Stirling University and Hamilton Academical. McCarthy feels the side can do what’s needed in the two games and hopefully extend the gap between themselves and the bottom half of the table.

“I’m confident for the games ahead. We have a strong team, and I know the girls can do it.  We played well when we had our last run of three games in a week and we can do that again.”

SBSSWPL1: Celtic 2 Forfar Farmington 1

Forfar Farmington’s winning run came to an end on Sunday as Celtic defeated them by the odd goal in three at K-Park.

Despite going ahead through Nicola Davidson’s fantastic free kick, two efforts from the edge of the box by Natalie Ross and Colette Cavanagh either side of half time ensured all three points stayed with the hosts.

There was just one change made from the win over Spartans a fortnight ago as Beth McPherson made her first start, replacing Hannah Stewart as she returned to Glasgow City following the conclusion of her loan spell.

At an extremely hot K-Park the game got off to a tricky start for both sides, with chances few and far between early on. Sarah Ewens fired wide from the edge of the box as she had the only chance in the opening quarter of an hour.

In the sixteenth minute Claire Adams sent a weak effort into the arms of Fiona McNicoll, but just three minutes later Farmington were ahead at the other end through captain Nicola Davidson.

The free kick specialist stepped up 35 yards out and sent her set piece beyond the despairing Gibson for her third goal of the season.

Celtic looked to get back into the game and had further chances with Nicole Pullar blazing over when one on one before Natalie Ross and Ewens failed to trouble McNicoll.

Josephine Giard was denied by McNicoll when one on one with Kayleigh Brough doing well to get back and put her off.

The hosts levelled things up just a minute before the break when Ross curled into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Following the break, Celtic looked to take the lead and came close early on as Alana Bruce denied Ross on the line.

It wasn’t long however, until they did find the back of the net and it was left back Colette Cavanagh who did so, racing towards goal before striking the ball past McNicoll.

Farmington were now the ones looking for an equaliser as Caroline Heron saw her effort blocked just after the hour mark.

Action in the second half was hard to come by with both sides having to cope with the heat, Celtic did come close to adding to their tally with Ewens having a header held before Adams blasted past the post from distance.

In the 82nd minute Cavanagh saw her effort cleared off the line, although in the aftermath Pullar was forced off following lengthy treatment for an injury.

Deep into injury time Pullar’s replacement failed to find the target as she met a Keeva Keenan cross but it wasn’t to matter as Celtic took all three points.

Farmington will now look to regroup before Wednesday’s fixture against Stirling University at Ochilview.

Milligan Delighted With Progress Made In Return From Injury

Sophie Milligan was delighted to make her way through ninety minutes at the weekend as she continues to regain match fitness and fight for a place in the Forfar Farmington squad.

The 25 year old defender has made just two competitive substitute appearances following a pre-season injury but praised her teammates for their current form in the Scottish Building Society Scottish Women’s Premier League One.

A Forfar Farmington XI defeated Jeanfield Swifts on Sunday with some of the main squad getting some valuable game time alongside St Johnstone players in the away ranks; Milligan felt it was a worthwhile exercise to regain her match sharpness.

“I’m definitely happy to get through a full game, you’re always wanting to start games and play as much as you can, so it was good to get the minutes under my belt. It was also pleasing to manage the whole game with no issues with my knee, so it is one less thing to worry about and just concentrate on my game.”

The side recently moved from second bottom up to fourth with three wins in a row and Milligan reckons things are now starting to click for the side following some good performances at the start of the season which produced no results.

She said: “The work rate was always there but we were just off the mark a bit at the start of the season, things have just really settled in place the last few games and the confidence and momentum in the squad is up again.”

As the team’s momentum built with the recent form, Milligan has had to settle for cameo appearances alongside others in the squad. While it may be frustrating for the defender not playing, she praised the current back line and reckons it’s all about the points at the end of the day.

“It’s frustrating to be unable to break into the side, but I also understand I’m just getting back to fitness and the girls have been solid at the back recently.”

“We’ve got the benefit of having a large squad of girls who are all more than capable of playing in the top league, so although players might not be playing as much as they’d like at times, you’d take the three points.”

“We are challenging for positions every night at training and it only betters the squad and the options we have to come off the bench and impact the game.

Farmington return to competitive action this Sunday against Celtic at K-Park and the centre back believes they can take confidence ahead of the tough clash.

“Without a doubt we can take confidence from the last month, it is high in the squad and we are starting to cut out the mistakes that in the past have cost us goals against the top teams, after competing so well for the majority of the game. So far this season the results in the league have shown that anyone is beatable on the day.”

Milligan is aware of the potential backlash from Celtic following their heavy 9-0 defeat to Hibernian in the SWPL Cup final but believes Farmington should concentrate on themselves rather than worry about the opponents.

“Obviously after a result like Sunday, Celtic will be wanting to come out and prove themselves, but we just need to concentrate on our own game.”

Brough Joy At Three Wins From Three

Kayleigh Brough was delighted to get maximum points from a difficult week as Forfar Farmington made it three wins in a row on Sunday.

After last week’s 4-2 win over Rangers, Mark Nisbet’s side defeated Stirling University 2-0 on Wednesday before a 3-1 win at Spartans on Sunday.

The defender played in all three games and reckons that having the belief was key to all three victories and hopes they can continue their form.

“I think it’s amazing that we have came out with three wins out of three. Personally I think it starts with belief and I think the girls had that from the first whistle against Rangers last week and we have continued it throughout the week.”

“We all know we are capable of it but it’s just taken up to now for it to happen and hopefully it will continue.”

Brough, 21, feels the team started strongly in the win over Spartans which has now lifted them to fourth in the Scottish Building Society Women’s Premier League One, just five points off the top.

“I thought the win over Spartans was well deserved. The girls have been excellent lately and I feel that the side came out strong from the start, always causing a threat to their defence and midfield.”

Addressing her own performance, the former Otero Junior College centre back felt she was comfortable throughout the game with Farmington only conceding through a late consolation.

“In general, I think my performance was good, I was comfortable throughout the game and won the majority of my 50/50 battles. The back line was kept tight and not a lot went through the defence until the last ten or fifteen minutes.”

This season has saw Brough appear in arguably her most consistent run of games as she has been ever present in the heart of the defence and the ever improving Dundonian believes the run in the team is a massive confidence boost.

“I feel that game time is obviously a major part of improving as a player. It gives me more confidence in myself on the park and makes me focus and concentrate a lot more in training knowing that I could be taking part in most, if not all, games.”

The side now have a fortnight’s break before their next fixture when they will face Celtic and while it can be seen as frustrating to have a break when the side are flying, Brough senses it is key that they rest up after the recent schedule but is keen to pick things up again in a fortnight.

“It is frustrating since we have been on such a high, but I think we need a break to rest the legs to allow us to be fully prepared for Celtic. There is nothing stopping us from picking up from where we left off when we play again, and I fully believe we have what it takes to beat Celtic next week.”

SBSSWPL1: Spartans 1 Forfar Farmington 3

Forfar Farmington made it three wins in a row on Sunday as they eased past Spartans 3-1 to increase the gap between themselves and the bottom three.

Nicola Davidson and Cheryl Kilcoyne’s first half goals saw Farmington ahead with Danni McGinley adding a third before Kaela McDonald-Nguah’s late consolation.

Head Coach Mark Nisbet kept the same starting eleven that defeated Stirling University on Wednesday as he looked to keep up the winning run they have built.

Both sides had chances in the opening ten minutes with Caroline Heron heading into the arms of Rachel Harrison from a Robyn Smith free kick before Spartans’ Alana Marshall fired wide from distance.

Heron could have opened the scoring shortly after when the hosts failed to clear their lines leading to the attacker volleying past the post from the edge of the box.

Cheryl Kilcoyne failed to find the target in the 16th minute while Sarah Clelland cut in from the left wing before sending a tame effort into Fiona McNicoll’s arms.

Farmington started to dominate play after the first twenty minutes and saw Heron once again denied by Harrison with a curling shot.

The deadlock was broken after 32 minutes through some slack clearing by the Spartans defence; Smith’s cross was flicked by Heron, the defence couldn’t clear their lines and captain Nicola Davidson was more than happy to rifle home her second of the season.

It wasn’t long until the lead was extended and four minutes later Heron received a cross from Smith, she laid it off for Cheryl Kilcoyne to strike from 20 yards out. Her initial effort hit the bar before it looked like it may have hit the keeper and rolled in.

Spartans looked to get back into the game but two long range efforts were nowhere near the target and Farmington went into the break two goals to the good.

The hosts went closer two minutes after the break when Rachel Walkingshaw hit the inside of the post with the ball flying back into play. Farmington started a counter attack and made them pay as Danni McGinley outmuscled two defenders before slipping past a third and stroking the ball into the net.

Smith could have made it four shortly after with Harrison doing well to push her shot wide while Heron had a shot of her own deflected wide.

Subsitutions began to affect the flow of the game and it wasn’t until the 72nd minute that another chance was carved out; Smith involved again as she curled a free kick into the danger zone for Megan McCarthy to send a header against her old friend the post.

Spartans sub Kaela McDonald-Nguah was their most dangerous outlet in the second half as she hit the side netting before seeing another shot pushed wide by McNicoll. From Douglas’ corner McDonald-Nguah nodded in what was a late consolation with four minutes remaining.

The result means Farmington have won three games in the last seven games and will be high on confidence ahead of their visit to Celtic in a fortnight.

SBSSWPL1: Stirling University 0 Forfar Farmington 2

Forfar Farmington made it two wins in a row with a deserved 2-0 win over Stirling University on a very wet Wednesday evening at the University Playing Fields.

Second half goals from Danni McGinley and debutant Megan Robb gave Mark Nisbet’s side all three points to create a gap between themselves and the bottom three sides.

After Sunday’s win over Rangers, just one change was made as Alana Bruce replaced Erin Cattanach meanwhile Leah White was named on the bench in place of Gemma Collier.

Stirling had the first couple of chances early on as Beth McKay’s free kick was headed wide by Demi Falconer before McKay struck a low effort that Fiona McNicoll saved with ease.

The first shot for Farmington came after eleven minutes through Cheryl Kilcoyne when she fired over from long range.

Two minutes later Robyn Smith saw her corner nodded past the post by Caroline Heron as the side started to settle into the game.

Hannah Stewart could have broken the deadlock as a Smith free kick was flicked on by Heron but the winger’s shot was saved by Chloe Logan and the keeper was called into action shortly after when she tipped Nicola Davidson’s free kick over the bar.

Farmington had the best chance of the half eight minutes before the break; Smith saw a shot deflected wide and from the corner Cassie Cowper’s volley beat the keeper but was headed off the line, this fell to Nicola Davidson and her 25 yard effort hit a defender and flew past the post.

A minute before the break Stewart saw her shot blocked by a defender as both sides went in to half time level.

The second half started off well as Farmington took control of the game straight away; Danni McGinley firing wide just a minute after the restart.

Shortly after Heron nodded wide from a Davidson free kick before Stirling gifted Farmington a chance in the 57th minute.

A poor pass back saw McGinley race into a one on one situation, her effort was parried by Logan and Smith sent the ball back into the danger zone only for Logan to push Heron’s effort past the post.

The deadlock was broken in the 68th minute; Davidson’s free kick was headed down by Heron and McGinley stretched her leg out to divert the header past Logan for her second of the season.

Mark Nisbet had named a trialist in his squad once again and she came close to grabbing a second for the side two minutes after the opener as she saw her 20 yard effort held.

Stirling’s first chance of the half came in the 72nd minute when Eva Rule sent her effort past the post before McKay and Rebecca Galbraith failed to find the target ten minutes later.

Debutant Megan Robb made sure of all three points with six minutes remaining; a Farmington attack was cleared only as far as Alana Bruce and she swung a cross into the box for Robb to curl past Logan from just inside the box.

It was almost three as the game came to a close with Heron sending a glancing header wide before Davidson saw her 25 yard effort dip inches over the crossbar.

The result means that Farmington now have a four point gap between themselves and the bottom three and they could extend this on Sunday with a trip to the capital to face Spartans.
