Forfar Farmington completed their championship winning season with a 4-0 win over Jeanfield Swifts as they were presented with the SBSSWPL2 trophy.
Danni McGinley’s double along with goals from substitutes Kayleigh Noble and Beth Shillitto earned Farmington the three points in front of a 200+ strong crowd.
After the previous week’s draw at Hearts, three changes were made with Fiona McNicoll, Alana Bruce and Erin Cattanach replacing Chantelle McKay, Kirsty Deans and Leah White.
Farmington started off well and put Jeanfield under early pressure with Gemma Collier and Robyn Smith seeing headers held by Bobby Cochran.
Smith was inches away from connecting with a Cheryl Kilcoyne cross in the tenth minute before Julia Scott saw her free kick gathered by the keeper shortly after.
Kilcoyne and Caroline Heron combined to send McGinley clear in the 20th minute but she could only send her shot straight at Cochran. Just 60 seconds later the striker found the net however; Cochran’s poor clearance landed at McGinley’s feet and she was more than happy to put Farmington ahead.
The game turned into a midfield battle following this with chances few and far between. Jeanfield’s first chance came on the half hour mark as Laura Dunn’s corner found Amy Henderson but she somehow sent the ball wide from two yards out.
Five minutes before the break Jeanfield captain Jade McDonald could only sent a shot from the edge of the box past the post.
It was a stuffy start to the second half as Farmington’s Erin Cattanach saw her name enter the referee’s book following a challenge on the wing.
Dunn couldn’t find the target for the visitors while at the other end McGinley saw her shot smothered by Cochran in the 55th minute.
Neither side was able to create many chances in the opening 25 minutes of the second half and it wasn’t until the 70th minute that the game opened up again.
Robyn Smith screwed the ball wide after racing onto a through ball but a minute later it was 2-0; Smith’s run to the byline saw her cut the ball back and Kayleigh Noble fiercely hammered the ball home.
Just over sixty seconds after the second goal and Farmington had added to their lead once again when the ball bobbled around the box; McGinley outmuscling a defender to send the ball past Cochran for her fifteenth goal in sixteen games.
From being only 1-0 up in the 70th minute, Farmington were 4-0 up by the 75th minute; Nicola Davidson’s free kick just inside the Jeanfield half was fumbled by Cochran and Shillitto tapped in from close range for her first senior goal.
With the points more or less sealed, the game quietened down once again with the next clear cut chance falling to Shillitto in the 89th minute; her shot after Nicola Davidson set her up saw her shot blocked.
There was almost a late goal of the season contender in the third minute of stoppage time with almost every Farmington player touching the ball in a series of passes culminating in Kayleigh Noble’s cross finding Kirsty Deans however her header flew inches past the post.
All in all, it was a good end to the season for the title winning squad who will look to build on this next season when they return to the top tier.
