Farmington Prepared For U15 Semi Final Test

It is semi final weekend in the Youth Scottish Cup and Forfar Farmington will be the U15’s only East Region representatives as they take on Aberdeen.

Coach Kieran Clifford spoke of his and fellow coaches Lee Hutcheon and Neill Robbie’s delight at their players’ progress, with the side scoring eight without reply in their journey enroute to Sunday’s semi final at Station Park.

The girls defeated Dunfermline Athletic, Glasgow Girls and Hamilton to reach this stage and Clifford is proud to be in the last four of the tournament.

“We are delighted with our journey so far in the Scottish Cup. We’ve come up against some really challenging opposition and Lee, Neill and I couldn’t be more proud of the progress the girls are making this year.”

Clifford admits that while the squad have a buzz about them going in to the game, he feels sorry for some of the players who will miss out on the game due to a school trip to Spain.

He said: “I’m feeling good ahead of the game but most importantly, the girls are up for it. There is a real buzz about them and they know what they need to do.”

“We’re unfortunate to have a couple of players who are currently enjoying a sunny trip to Madrid and Barcelona this weekend and it’s a shame that they won’t be part of the day but we don’t rely on individuals and we’ve got plenty quality to keep going in this competition.”

The side moved up an age level in July to U17’s and Clifford reckons the move can help the side against Aberdeen and beyond.

“We made the decision to move them up within the region so they can get used to playing a stronger, faster game. This is what you expect when you come up against the elite teams in Scotland.”

“Allowing players to play at a level that fits their ability rather than age is important to us and we are reaping the benefits with a number of our youth players progressing through the club and gaining recognition at national level.”

The semi final was originally scheduled to be played in Kilwinning however it was moved to Station Park, with Bayside and Aberdeen playing each other at Market Muir earlier in the day. Clifford welcomed the decision to move the ties while expressing his delight that it shows the East and North regions are improving.

It makes sense to move the tie, more so for Aberdeen. I don’t think it’s an issue most years because historically it tends to be teams from the South or Central Scotland who make it to these stages. This goes to show how much the game is growing in the northern regions with Bayside and Aberdeen also reaching the Semi-Final of the U13s cup. The decision taken by the SWF to allow these fixtures to be relocated is most welcome.

U15s Success in East Region League Cup Final

The East Region League Cup travelled back up the A90 from Dundee in the possession of Forfar Farmington U15s after they gave a first class performance against Raith Rovers FC that saw them retain the trophy. A standout day for girls’ football in the Region that saw a huge amount of players from many teams either participating in a friendly tournament or competing in the U13, U15 and U17 League Cups was capped from our perspective by the success of our U15 girls.

The day started off with the team in a spirit of togetherness as they made their way to Dundee on the team coach. This togetherness and team spirit continued on to the pitch from the minute the whistle blew as our girls immediately pressed the Raith defence. A number of near misses, great saves by the Raith keeper and resolute defending saw the match remain goalless until some great play by Neve Guthrie saw her get to the line before cutting the ball back to Philippa McCallum who made no mistake as she dispatched the ball into the net. It wasn’t long before a second for Forfar came along and it was Neve Simpson who clinically fired home after a great ball in from Steffi Simson had found her in the box. Forfar were now really stretching the Raith defence with great possession and continual offensive play and they were rewarded with a great goal. Taylor Clifford played a lovely ball into the path of the onrushing Katie White whose perfect cross was met first-time by Neve Guthrie to fire home. A fourth and final goal of the first arrived when a super Amy Docherty cross was met by Aimee Robertson who reacted quickest to pick it up and then turn the defender to fire home.

The second half saw the girls from Forfar picking up from where they left off as they yet again pressed and pressured their opponents. The pressing play paid off when a loose ball across the box was picked up by Steffi Simson who calmly rolled the ball into the far corner. Steffi added to her tally two minutes later with a fierce angled drive that fairly flew into the net. Neve Guthrie again added an assist to her performance when another cutback was met by Kacey McCabe who firmly placed a controlled strike into the net. Neve Simpson then added to her tally when she latched on to a Taylor Clifford through ball to fire home and it was Taylor who then got her name on the score sheet with a well-taken goal.

The match then played out its remainder in a competitive manner without any further scoring from either side.

Rachel Robbie was captain for the day and she was delighted to receive the cup and lift it aloft to the cheers of her team-mates. Well done on your achievement girls from everyone involved with the club.

Club Chairman Colin Brown commented “Well done to both teams taking part in Cup Finals today I was so proud of each and everyone of you, there was only one winner today and that was Forfar Farmington F.C. You are all what this club is about and that is girls and ladies football here in Forfar and Angus well done to you all, you were fantastic!!”

U-15s & U-17s Get Boost from Bertie

The impressive Farmington youth section continues to provide an excellent pathway for players in the area to achieve their potential. The most recent example of this is the progression of Erin Ross, Zoe Moreland, Ellie Cook & Anne Murrie who have been promoted a year early from the Club’s successful U15s side to continue their development in a higher age group.

Also joining the squad is Sally Patterson who will be playing U17 football this season to allow her to focus on her studies. With her experience at senior level she will be a good addition to the squad.

The recent “new” recruits to the U17 squad are looking forward to the challenge that faces them in the new season and their ability will undoubtedly show as the season progresses.

Pre-season training is well underway for the Farmington U15 and U17 squads with combined sessions with former world kickboxing champion George Bertie at his Results Fitness Studio in Forfar.

The sessions are aimed at being fun and to allow the players to work on speed, agility and plyometrics to complement their footballing activities. Judging by the smiles on their faces at the end they are clearly enjoying the sessions that are laid on by George.

The joint sessions are held to ensure that the squads are integrated and emphasise the community club ethos we have here at Forfar Farmington. This gym session is to remain a regular feature for the girls as they build up their strength to prepare for the new season and will continue throughout the year to ensure the high standard is maintained.
