U17’s Record Comfortable Victory In Kirkcaldy

The U17 side had to postpone rolling their chocolate eggs due to our Easter Sunday fixture through in Kirkcaldy against Raith Rovers Ladies. Their efforts on the day meant that an end of game wee bite or two of chocolate would be in order as they put in a committed and impressive performance in their victory over their opponents from the Lang Toun.

The initial stages saw both sides come to terms with the slippery conditions however it wasn’t long before Forfar’s pressing play saw them apply a consistent level of pressure on the Raith midfield and defence. This period of pressure resulted in a number of efforts being thwarted by a combination of good defending and goalkeeping from the Raith keeper. The pressure continued to build however and the deadlock was eventually broken when Eve Warden picked up the ball just outside the box before firing a low drive into the net. Forfar’s passing and pressing play was proving quite a handful for Raith and further goals were added to the away team’s tally with Steffi Simpson, Philippa McCallum, Kacey McCabe and Taylor Clifford all finding the net on at least one occasion.

The girls from Raith Rovers found some joy playing down the hill in the second half and their lone striker showed great commitment to her team’s cause as she harassed the Forfar defence at every opportunity. On the day though Forfar proved to be a difficult outfit to control and their continued levels of pace and pressing play some them adding more goals to further increase their lead. The second half Steffi Simpson and Taylor Clifford add to their goal count with Katie White, Melissa Coull, Erin Ross and Lucy Corbett, who scored her first goals for the 17s team, all adding to the goals for Forfar.

Raith Rovers did manage to pull one back late in the game when a dangerous inswinging corner was flashed into the net by the head of their hard-working no.10 from midfield.

Overall it was a very convincing victory on the day for the girls from Forfar. They didn’t allow their opponents any time or space to settle and at times their passing and movement was very impressive.

We would like to thank all at Raith Rovers for their warm welcome on a cold day and we wish them all the best as their season moves forward.

Clifford Delighted To Make Senior Debut

Taylor Clifford admitted that she was nervous at first but once she realised she had nothing to worry about she enjoyed making her senior debut for the club.

The 15 year old played the last five minutes of Sunday’s 5-3 win against Motherwell and Clifford hopes she can make more appearances for the side.

She explained that she was grateful to be named in the squad by Mark Nisbet and was delighted to play a part of the game.

Clifford said: “I was so grateful that I had the opportunity to play for the first team as I am only 15 and it’s a great experience for me.”

“I was nervous at first but then I realised that there is nothing to be nervous about. All I had to do was go out and enjoy myself.”

The youngster is keen to add to her tally now she has made her debut and believes working with the Performance Squad has made her a stronger player.

“I hope I will get another opportunity to play for the Premier League team again in the future.”

She continued: “Working with the Performance Squad has helped me improve and I think it’s shown as well because it’s made me a stronger player.”

U17: Forfar Farmington 1 Aberdeen 1

After an excellent end to last season that saw our young team of girls move up to take on the challenge of the under 17 league and some great performance in their pre-season friendlies it was with great anticipation that they took to the field to take on the girls from Aberdeen. On a beautiful day for football those in attendance were treated to some terrific play that saw both teams battle to gain a well earned point as the match ended 1-1.

The Farmington side started the match very well and they pressed their opponents into their own half in the first ten minutes. Although Forfar were in the ascendancy, it was obvious Aberdeen were a very capable outfit as they played some nice passing football as well as showing some steel to keep Forfar at bay. A couple of counter attacks from Aberdeen threatened the Forfar goal but the combination of the defence and AJ Meach in goal ensured that they didn’t fall behind.

Forfar took the lead midway through the first half with a well-taken goal; Eve Warden showed great awareness and competitiveness to nick in and win the ball for her team. She fired the ball back across the edge of the Aberdeen box that was then deflected into the path of the onrushing Philippa McCallum who calmly flicked the ball over the keeper and into the net.

The girls pressed and pressed for a second goal however the visitors defence stood firm and the first half ended with no further goals scored.

Aberdeen stepped up the intensity of their play in the second half and it wasn’t long before they equalised with a cracking drive from the edge of the box. This started a period of play where they were on top and although they created a few decent chances they couldn’t get themselves in front. Farmington withstood this pressure and gradually got themselves back into the game and it was only a superb save from the keeper that prevented Niamh Simpson from putting her team ahead.

Both teams played very well and their respective coaches will be pleased to have registered their first point on the board for this season.

From a Forfar perspective, this match bodes well for a good season in the U17 league. As with last season, we are sure that the girls will kick on from games such as this and build up a momentum that will see them grow and rise to the challenge of the season ahead.

McCallum Overjoyed To Represent Country

Philippa McCallum was the latest to represent the club for their country last week when she appeared for the Scotland U16’s in a Development Tournament.

The 14 year old started the second and third games against Iceland and Czech Republic, helping the Scots keep a clean sheet in both while grabbing an assist in the former game.

McCallum spoke of her delight to be appearing for her country and reckons it was a privilege to be involved.

She said: “It feels fantastic to be involved with the national squad at that level.  I feel really proud to be representing them. I’m very pleased with all of my performances during the tournament and felt really privileged to be on the pitch.”

The youngster, who can play in the centre of midfield or at left back hopes she can elevate herself to the older national squads and one day play in the Premier League with Farmington. McCallum has already trained in the club’s Performance Squad and hopes the good run can continue.

“I hope to one day play for the first team at Farmington and hopefully this will help me continue to play at international level for a long time.”

She continued: “I’ve been asked to train with the senior squad before and hopefully this will help me progress as a team player at that level.”

Farmington Youngsters Involved In SFA Coaching Course

The club are encouraging their young footballers to expand on their football knowledge by getting involved in coaching courses.

16 year old Performance Squad members Leah White and Caitlin Mitchell along with 18 year old Rachelle Milton from our Ladies squad all took part in the recent SFA East Region 1.1 Early Touches course at Brechin High School.

All three girls have been involved with the club’s youth setup by coaching the U7 and U9 groups. It is an ideal situation to have these young women, who have achieved so much at Farmington, help with the junior girls and offer real female football role models for the youngsters at the club.

Junior Co-ordinator Jane Luckhurst is pleased to see players get involved with coaching younger girls, explaining: “In order to be successful our club relies heavily on volunteer help, as every club does, but the ideal situation would be if we could encourage more players to get involved in the coaching side of the club. This allows them to pass on their knowledge to the junior girls, and the junior girls are delighted to have the older players as coaches.”

Leah, Caitlin and Rachelle will all be taking part in the Level 1.2 course next month.

U-15s & U-17s Get Boost from Bertie

The impressive Farmington youth section continues to provide an excellent pathway for players in the area to achieve their potential. The most recent example of this is the progression of Erin Ross, Zoe Moreland, Ellie Cook & Anne Murrie who have been promoted a year early from the Club’s successful U15s side to continue their development in a higher age group.

Also joining the squad is Sally Patterson who will be playing U17 football this season to allow her to focus on her studies. With her experience at senior level she will be a good addition to the squad.

The recent “new” recruits to the U17 squad are looking forward to the challenge that faces them in the new season and their ability will undoubtedly show as the season progresses.

Pre-season training is well underway for the Farmington U15 and U17 squads with combined sessions with former world kickboxing champion George Bertie at his Results Fitness Studio in Forfar.

The sessions are aimed at being fun and to allow the players to work on speed, agility and plyometrics to complement their footballing activities. Judging by the smiles on their faces at the end they are clearly enjoying the sessions that are laid on by George.

The joint sessions are held to ensure that the squads are integrated and emphasise the community club ethos we have here at Forfar Farmington. This gym session is to remain a regular feature for the girls as they build up their strength to prepare for the new season and will continue throughout the year to ensure the high standard is maintained.
